Sri Kailaswanathar Temple Nedungudi.

Sri Kailasanathar-Prasanna Nayaki Temple, Nedungudi, Pudukkottai district.
During the Puranic Age, Nedungudi was dense with Vilwa trees on a mount.  Two brothers, Perunjeevi and Chiranjeevi came to this place to worship Lord Shiva.  Perunjeevi asked the younger brother Chiranjeevi to bring a Shivalinga for the penance from Kasi.  As the younger brother could not reach Nedungudi with a Linga from Kasi in time, Perunjeevi made a Linga himself and began the worship.  When Chiranjeevi returned with the Shivalinga from Kasi, he begged his brother to do puja for this Linga too but Perunjeevi refused to do so.  The younger brother began intense penance for the approval of his Linga.

Lord Shiva appeared before the brothers and named Perunjeevi’s Linga as Kailasanathar and that of Chiranjeevi as Kasinathar and told them that those worshipping both Lingas would gain the benefit of praying at Kasi and Kailash.

The temple was renovated by the Pandya kings in the 13th century.
The Giri Valam (going around the mount) as practiced in Tiruvannamalai is followed in the Nedungudi temple too on Poornima days.  There is a river at the foothills of the temple in the northeast called Paamparu and Sarpa Nadhi in the Girivalam path.  Bathing in this river and worship the Lord bring all benefits to the devotee.

On Poornima (full moon day), Amavasya (new moon day) and first of Tamil month days and Pradosham (13th day either from new moon or full moon day) special pujas are performed to Nandhi Bhagwan (the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva) with bhajans.
Those seeking child boon, have a dip in the Sarpa river, stay in the temple for a day and go 5 rounds in the car street.  They perform, abishek and archanas to Lord Kailasanathar and Mother Prasanna Nayaki to get a child.  Women facing risk to their Mangal Sutras also pray here with their parents.

Those mentally weak or retarded are advised to sit on the Padma peeta in the mandap, the roof of which has the zodiac chakra and chant “Om Namasivaya” mantra 108 times.
